Your dog is your best friend

When I first got my dog, Fenna, we had a few ups and downs before we settled well together. I had to do a lot of research and talk to the vet to learn what I needed to do in order to have a balanced and settled dog-human relationship.

Good food and regular exercise is one of the key factors in ensuring you have a happy dog. They love having a routine and knowing who is the boss and you can establish both through exercise and food. It is important that your dog is house trained quickly and that it understands basic commands when out on walks. The better trained they are the better the quality of time will be that you spend together. Knowing that you will have a clean house and that you can let your dog off its lead and that it will return to you really leaves out a lot of stress of having a dog. And if you are stress free then your dog will be more relaxed as well. A good quality dog food, like Iams dog food, will help keep your dog happy and healthy. Lams dog food contains the highest quality of natural ingredients without added colours, additives or flavourings.

When Fenna was young she was always riddled with fleas and miserable with it. Her previous owners had neglected her and left her infested for weeks if not months. Consequently she had been itching a lot and had a number of scabs and skin problems. We used the flea treatment Frontline to get rid of her fleas and we used some cream prescribed by the vet to help her with her skin. Luckily she recovered quickly and regular flea treatment has kept the fleas at bay. We had to de flea our whole house – carpets, soft furnishings etc. but the lack of fleas since was well worth it! I would highly advise keeping on top of flea treatment, it keeps the animal happy and is worth avoiding the stress of de-fleaing an entire house.

The final thing I have learnt about keeping a happy dog is that it is important to ensure they are not bored. Invest in a good amount of dog toysto keep them entertained when you are not at home. This will help any costly destruction of your house.

So good food, exercise, discipline, routine, no fleas and plenty of toys are my keys to dog keeping success!
