Since I am not in a position to hunt wild game for my dogs nor find a ‘cure’ i.e. vitamin/nutrient replacement to replace what his man-made diet is missing I guess I, like you and the hundreds of other experts, will just have to speculate on the issue without finding a solution.

Dogs eat grass precisely because of the nutrients lacking in commercial foods. Dogs who eat bioligically appropriate (raw; prey model) diets do not eat grass. An interesting note – they also don’t consume nearly as much water as dogs who eat kibble.

The nutrients found in kibbles are synthetic, and most commercial dog foods, both canned and dry, contain a large amount of grains that are used as fillers, but are virtually undigestable. Dogs cannot and do not recieve much, if any, nutrition from ingredients like corn, wheat, and soy. Grass contains essential nutrients that dogs eating commercial diets might crave.

Experts including behaviorists and veterinarians now openly admit that dogs intuitively eat plants according to their specific medicinal value. Dogs aren’t as stupid as many folks think they are!

While it can be entertaining and fun for the dog, excessive or sudden grass eating can be because of a medical issue, an obsessive disorder, or just out of habit. If the grass or plant matter a dog eats has been treated with pesticides or other chemicals, it can be dangerous to a dog’s health; many pesticides and chamicals are known carcinogens and cause neurological disorders, Additionally, many plants are poisonous to dogs in large quantities.

It is the opinion of many experts that grass eating is an issue that shouldn’t be over-looked or dismissed. A simple google search turns up hundreds of pages full of information – by true experts – regarding why dogs eat grass.
