Choosing a Mixed Breed Dog
There are some adorable mixed breeds out there and many people are going in this direction when looking for a pet. Here you will have a large choice, as breeders are coming up with different mixed breeds every year. Some of the most popular are:
- Cockapoo, which is a cross between a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle. An intelligent, low-shedding dog that fits well into family life.
- Schnoodle , a cross between a Schnauzer and a Poodle, is also a low-shedding dog that fits in nicely with the family.
- Labradoodle, a cross between a Labrador Retriever and a standard Poodle. It is a non-shedding dog, with the intelligence of a Poodle.
- Porkie is a Pug and Yorkshire terrier cross- a long-haired, hearty, small dog.
- Puggles are a cross between the Pug and the Beagle. A friendly dog who loves to be part of a family.
I’m sure I’ve missed a few though so look forward to your input.
The mixed breeds are different, have cute names, and often have the best features of both dogs. Find a breeder who specializes in this type of dog and make a visit when there is a litter to see. You will have a lot of fun doing this, and it will certainly help you in your choice of a mixed breed.
These dogs are often called cross breed dogs because the breeder has crossed two definite breeds for a specific purpose. They are also known as “designer” dogs because many Hollywood stars and New York Society people go to breeders with their own ideas of what mix they want.
One special mixed breed is the Shih-Poo, a cross between the Shih-Tzu and the Poodle. Although not recognized as a breed of dog, the Shih-Poo is an adorable little dog. They do not have the short, pushed-in snout of the Shih-Tzu, thus helping with breathing problems.
The Shih-Poo has a life span of 14-17 years, and usually weighs between 10-25 pounds. The ears are long and floppy, and the tail of the Shih-Poo is long and fan-shaped. A good apartment dog, the Shih-Poo, in the opinion of many people, is the cutest puppy they’ve ever seen!

You just can go wrong breeding your dog with Poo. The main goal is to get the hypoallergenic qualities and smarts while trying to breed out the independent nature of the poodle.

After we just adopted our little pooch, I began to realize that the best way to get a mixed-breed dog is to rescue one. There are so many that need homes. Our dog is a Poo-Shi (Shiba-Inu), per the DNA test.
To return to the topic, as much as people like poodle mixes, poodles are great dogs on their own. I grew up with them and they’re fantastic. Healthy, smart, hypoallergenic, loyal, loving, and goofy enough to keep you giggling. My friend’s Standard Poo stayed by his wife’s side for 8 months while she died of breast cancer and only left her side to go on walks, eat, and get someone if she needed something (the dog did this of her own accord, without needing to be trained to).
You can’t go wrong with a Poo.
