This is very interesting, it is good to read up on different reasons behind dogs whining. We have tried ignoring our dog many times over the years. He starts to whine as soon as I sit down and if we ignore him he gets in such a state he ends up hot and panting after about 10 minutes. Not something you can ignore really! So we end up relentlessly finding new things to do all evening. Still life could be a lot worse than entertaining a stroppy dog all night :-)

This was very informative, thanks so much! I have a new adult chihuahua and she never wants to leave my side. Even while I am sleeping or in the bathroom, she whines. So you have indeed answered one of my questions, which is what the cause of it is, and you have also answered how to solve it. But I am still curious, are there other ways to solve it? I will continue researching, but thanks for some answers!

I'm so glad that you mentioned that sometimes the whining is appropriate--sure, it's usually manipulative ;-), but it's really important not to just scold the dog without considering the circumstances first. Though I do wish scolding snoring was appropriate (Vance is snoring very loudly as I write this ;-)) because that's almost as annoying as the whining when I have a headache.
