I recon the best way to train your puppy is to go with the flow. Most people lose their cool when they feel they have tried everything to get the dog to do a trick but he/she won't. The trick is to play all sorts of games with your dog with varying positions and toys etc (more variety the better) until the dog does something like lie down on his own or roll over -> thats when you immediately say "lie-down" and you praise the dog. This way the dog simply learns the action 1st and then that's when you start giving those actions names and praises. Sounds a bit weird, but it works. My dobie could sit, heel and play fetch at 9 weeks! Remember, these actions have been built into the dogs fibre for the last 100 years or so. All these actions are as natural as the dogs barking, and thats why we go for such dogs (high pedigrees) as they hardly need to be taught anything, just reinforced ;)

I agree that sit is the easiest trick to show your dog. I have a red nose pitbull and i taught him to sit when he was 4 months old. It took him about a day to learn to sit. He is 6 months and knows how to sit, stay, lay, play dead, roll, jump and speak.

I have a 12 weeks old doberman it took him 1 week to learn to sit. So this week I started the shake he has that down now too. Not sure if he is just smart or really would do anything for a bacon strip.
