Dog Ear Mites: Herbal Help in Combating Ear Mites on Dogs
Our next door neighbor infected our dogs with ear mites, and suffice it to say, dog ear mites are just as unpleasant for humans as they are for puppies and dogs. Dog ear mites can be really common, and most puppies actually come with ear mites, but when your adult dog household contracts ear mites, I discovered that you need a fast acting herbal remedy to help control them. Otherwise, they simply pass the mites back and forth between each other which is really quite maddening.
Angie, our next door neighbor’s sweet and loveable, albeit loud, 8 year old Schnauzer came to stay with us for sixteen days when her humans took a vacation. As much as she is welcome in our home any time, the ear mite problem proved to be one of the most frustrating doggie babysitting experiences to date. Her little dog ear mites transferred to our Beagle and our Shepherd most likely from her rough-housing or her doggie bed sharing.
Either way, within two or three days of her arrival our dogs started scratching at their ears like they were on fire. So now we have three dogs in the home that are suffering from disrupted sleep from ear scratching (as are the humans in the home from the noise of restless, scratching dogs) are causing bloody scratches in their ears, and are yelping from discomfort when they continue to scratch. Ironically, not all pups find dog ear mites to be all that uncomfortable and yet all three of these dogs were miserable.
When this little outbreak occurred I really didn’t know all that much about the problem. I really wasn’t even sure if this was something that could be cared for using a holistic dog treatment for dog ear mites. We initially tried just cleaning the ears really well like we read on the internet. Our skepticism was proven accurate when an hour later we found all three dogs scratching like banshees at their ears again. The dog ear mites were winning, wearing us down with restless sleep, distressed and unhappy dogs, and the proposition of a significant vet bill for three dogs that would need treatment. It was only day four of Angie’s visit and I had enough.
Fortunately, we were able to find a holistic dog treatment that was able to clear up the dog ear mites for all three of the unhappy puppies and it even seemed to make their coats and skin a bit healthier. The Beagle’s normally itchy and dry skin was more moisturized and he seemed rather content not only with the banishing of the dog ear mites but the comfort provided by the holistic remedy that we used. We don’t like to apply ear drops to the Beagle’s ears because his blindness means he relies on his hearing a great deal. Ear drops throw off his equilibrium and he becomes a pinball bouncing off walls and furniture he normally navigates.
The most difficult aspect of this holistic remedy we found for dog ear mites was the time consuming effort of getting all three dogs to behave like little angels in the bathtub. The payoff was three happy dogs that slept better, stopped gouging their eardrums out, and an Angie that returned home happier and healthier than she arrived. This little bit of extra care meant that our neighbors were more than happy to dogsit our boys for our next trip out of town!
